DIPLO HOME ♖ The prototype of my modular bookshelves is here!
Remember my post on bookshelf ideas? I finally came up with a design that suited me. it’s a combination of several designs. I liked this the most of all the pegs on my post, but had to find a way to reinterpret the idea in wood. It’s not as easy as copying the design. Besides if we just had this made in wood, it would be so tedious to take apart when we move. It would be too heavy and bolted to the wall and floor. We finally came up with a stand-alone design (wherein I could have several smaller, easier to manipulate and transport pieces) that covered most of the wall to maximize space, but also something that I could afford, was stable and didn’t use up too much wood! A few days ago my standing mirror finally arrived. Remember my hallway? The only thing that’s been missing from our entry hall were coat hooks and a full length mirror. It’s a must for me to be able to check t0p to toe before heading out (sometimes a shoe is perfect with my outfit in my head but in the mirror it turns my legs to logs LOL!).

After taking advantage of the massive Aksara Bookstore sale last month we can now safely say that we NEED bookshelves. Since my priority right now is the monstrous L-shaped buffet table/china cabinet, then the liquor cabinet I am thinking of ordering vertical bookshelves first as a quick short-term solution. Then when we are able to save up for it, I want to have floor to ceiling modular bookshelves. Here are some design inspirations I found on the net. Pictures after the jump!

Best Christmas gift ever is Danni (our furniture-maker) delivering our hall furniture 2 days before Christmas. It was perfect timing for the Christmas Eve dinner we were hosting! Danni arrived on the afternoon of December 23, but had to return the morning of the 24th because “assembly” took longer than expected. Read on and you will see why!

However being the anal obsessive compulsive person that I am, I want to design furniture that is double/triple purpose with a lot of storage to maximize our small apartment. This requires a lot of research, imagination and some technical knowledge (i.e. kinds of hinges to use, thickness of the wood to support X amount of Kilos, structural integrity of the design, etc.)

We got our flat unfurnished so we could invest in good old teakwood furniture (which is something Indonesia is known for). Another word for “old” is “recycled.” Basically meaning, they salvage pieces from old houses or furniture. Since new wood has a tendency to crack, then we wanted old wood, because years of proper drying out makes it less likely to warp/crack. That’s just my train of thought.
