Cringe worthy movies: Due Date & Dinner for Schmucks

Cringe worthy movies: Due Date & Dinner for Schmucks

I wasted 4 hours of my life last weekend. Seriously. I love watching funny movies, but these movies were not funny at all… rather they were painful to watch.

dinner for schmucks movie poster

From the makers of The Hangover: Robert Downey Jr. as Peter Highman & Zach Galifianakis as Ethan Tremblay

This movie really made me dislike Zach Galifianakis even more. He was barely tolerable in The Hangover. I know it’s supposed to be his character, but why write such a character anyway? The patience of Downey’s character is unbelievable and I’m not even sure why he keeps saying he has a problem. On the contrary, I thought he was being an idiot/martyr even staying 5 minutes with that dangerous loser.

The Social Network

Finally got to watch the movie last night and I loved it! Not necessarily for the production value, but because it’s informative and let’s us peek behind the curtains into the lives of people who have changed the way we live our lives FOREVER.  (Though I am not saying production wasn’t good – I just didn’t notice it much because I was too caught up by the story.

I admit that ever since moving out of the country, I’ve been an absolute Facebook fiend. It has prevented me from feeling lonely in a new country, kept me in touch with friends back home and got me back in touch withe friends all over the world. In fact I like to say that now I am much more in touch with some of my friends in Manila than I was when I was actually living there! Crazy right?

But it’s true because when I was in Manila I was always working too much. And that was my focus. But now I am a housewife + Facebook and I am all hooked up! LOL.

The movie has led me to more questions though. Why di Mark Z. reduce the shares of his partner? Why does Sean have the same share after the drug bust? And most importantly are the “Winklevi“ really as good-looking as Armie Hammer? (doesn’t he remind you of a totally hotter young Brendan Fraser?!?) I’ve had a crush on him since I laid eyes on him on Gossip Girl in 2009.

The first two questions make me wanna read The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, which was the basis for the movie. Interesting to note that Eduardo Saverin was a consultant for Mezrich’s story. But the last question can be answered by a simple Google search! I’ll let you be the judge!

The drool-worthy, Armie Hammer. He was supposed to play Bruce Wayne in the cancelled movie Justice League - too bad. He would have been and awesome Bruce Wayne - chiseled jaws and all! =P

I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie! And your two cents on my questions above or any questions of your own! =)

Disappointed with Ashton Kutcher’s Killers

Disappointed with Ashton Kutcher’s Killers

I absolutely adore Ashton Kutcher and who doesn’t like Katherine Heigl? A movie with these two should’ve been a sure hit in my book. But their combined good-looks and likeability (made-up word?) could not salvage this movie.

The trailer was okay but the movie did not live up to expectation. The “punch-lines” fell flat, the acting was horrible and exaggerated, verging on slap-stick. Usually Kutcher and Heigl are great at comedies and their timing perfect.  The characters were not developed and the story-line was rushed. For some reason Kutcher was not believable as a suave spy/deadly killer (didn’t realize he had this high-pitched tone to his voice – sorta whiny) and Heigl was completely annoying with all that screaming. Her character kept shifting to and from girly-I-can’t-believe-I’m-holding-a-gun to matter-of-factly-slinging-one – again confusing, as well as not believable.  I like them better as quirky characters in romcoms. No more suave killers and shoot-outs please.

Finally watched Knight and Day

Finally watched Knight and Day

Image via VCTV

I’ve been waiting for Knight and Day to show in theaters and my husband surprised me yesterday by making time in his hectic workweek to watch it with me, on a Monday nonetheless.

I was not disappointed. But please note I love Romcoms so I am that kinda girl. Aside from a couple of cheesy moments at the end, the Tom Cruise & Cameron Diaz action-comedy kept us laughing most of the time – which is more than I can say for the snoozy “comedy” Date Night (gotta say I expected more from Steve Carell, Tina Fey and the many other comedians in that cast).

SO cute!

I’ve to say though that for one to enjoy the movie, one has to suspend disbelief & just enjoy the roller coaster ride of hilarious impossible situations. Tom Cruise was perfect for the ever-charming, suave and deadly super secret agent. That smile will make any girl melt even if she is being shot at – so for me, yes it was believable. Cameron Diaz was the perfect person to play the cute, girl-next-door heroine – I can’t imagine any other actress pulling this off!

SPOILER ALERT: Loved that they refer to this movie on the first episode of Entourage Season 7 – about how Tom Cruise did his own stunts when the scared Vincent Chase didn’t want to do his own.

Tom Cruise is back! I don’t care what the box office says. This is so far one of my top movies of the year – if not my #1! Sorry Sex and the City 2, you are not on that list.

Okay some of you might say I am biased since I’ve had a crush on him since I was a kid (I don’t care about the Cruise-bashing post Katie Holmes). I’m not saying it’s cool or anything (because Brad Pitt is so much cooler) but it is what it is. So I guess you’ll have to watch it and see if I’m right or just blinded by my Hollywood crush. =P

Drop me a line when you do and let me know what you think!

When in Rome & Josh Duhamel’s “DUH?” look

When in Rome & Josh Duhamel’s “DUH?” look

Just finished watching “When in Rome” last night. It was okay – it had some funny moments. Nothing too spectacular though, because at the end of the movie, I didn’t come out with that giddy feeling I usually get after a good rom-com. Instead my first thought was:

“I didn’t realize that Josh Duhamel had this ‘DUH?’ look?!?”

Did anyone else notice it?!?  He does this thing wherein his mouth skews to one side of his face, every time he does an emotional scene. It just happened SO many times in the movie, I couldn’t help noticing it!

Josh Duhamel's pensive-DUH look

Josh Duhamel's annoyed-DUH look

Josh Duhamel's DUH look in night-vision

Josh Duhamel's blah-DUH look

Josh Duhamel's anguished-DUH look

Josh Duhamel's gentle-DUH look

Josh Duhamel's HO-hum-DUH look

He’s still good-looking in my book though. And I want to have that gorgeous, even tan!!! Hmmmm…. I wonder if it’s spray tan?!

Girl-bonding time with mi suegra

Girl-bonding time with mi suegra

I had a wonderful girl-bonding afternoon with my mother-in-law. It was an afternoon of shopping, salon time, merienda (late afternoon snack between lunch and dinner) and culminated with a movie at the Rockwell Cinema.
