NEW TV SHOWS: Sirens, FWB and Strike Back

Hey there folks! While watching for all the TV show to start in the next couple of days, let me share with you some new shows I’m watching in the meantime. It feels like a British invasion, because 3 out of 4 is from the UK.

NEW TV SHOW: Awkward

NEW TV SHOW: Awkward

Just watched 3 episodes of this new show. I was hesitant at first to even check it out, because…well… it’s an MTV show! I didn’t like the US versions of Skins (the British version is brilliant in a psychedelic, beautiful sorta way) and shows like 16 and Pregnant (The trailers alone are horrible) and Jersey Shore *shudder*, I thought nothing good could come of it. But I was happily surprised by Awkward.

NEW TV SHOW: The Voice

NEW TV SHOW: The Voice

Yes American Idol, there’s a new kid in town and for the first time (in my humble opinion), there is a talent show that I can see becoming as big as the talent show behemoth AI. Note though that this are just my thoughts after watching the first episode and that things can totally change throughout the season.

New TV Show: Being Human U.S.

Being Human US TV show Poster

I loved the original British supernatural drama-comedy, Being Human from BBC. In fact it even replaced True Blood as my favorite vampire/supernatural show. The U.S. version is now showing and I watched the first episode. How did it hold up?

New TV show: The Defenders

Not a flattering pic of O’Connell
The Defenders (Series Premiere, September 22, 10 p.m.)

Not included in my original list of TV shows for fall 2010 (just added it though), I recently discovered The Defenders. A new CBS legal comedy-drama about 2  Las Vegas defense attorneys who are sort of legal “bad boys” and go about defending their clients in a manner that’s definitely not by the book. Based on real life Vegas lawyers, Michael Cristalli and Marc Saggese.

“an irreverant new legal drama about two fiery and charismatic Las Vegas defense attorneys. Tenacious, defiant and completely engaging, they argue the law, and they follow the law, but they always keep a few tricks of their sleeves. No matter what the odds, these lawyers keep fighting for the little guy.”

- CBS

I can’t say it’s brilliant but will say it’s entertaining. I’m betting the story line doesn’t strictly stick to the legal process and some situations wouldn’t happen in a real courtroom – but who am I to say? I’m no expert. It does make for some entertainment though.

Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell in the defenders tv show

The show has its moments and make me laugh too. The best thing about it is the rapport between Jerry O’Connell (free-wheeling playboy Pete Kaczmarek) and Jim Belushi (passionate lawyer with a big heart Nick Morelli). It doesn’t hurt that O’Connell looks hot in a suit (and those AMAZING blue eyes)! He is back baby!

New TV show: Better With You

New TV show: Better With You

Better with You poster

Better With You (Series Premiere, September 22, 8:30 p.m.)

“This new comedy is one of many new shows coming out about navigating the treacherous gauntlet known as… love! Beware!”

About the stories of 3 related couples: Mia and Casey who have known each other for 7 weeks but are about to get married, Mia’s sister Maddie and her live in partner Ben (together 9 years), and Mia and Maddie’s parents, Joel and Vicky (married 35 years). A humorous look into the lives of couples in different stages of their relationships, that I think many married couples can relate to.

Okay I’ve to admit I wasn’t so enamored with this show on the first 2 episodes, but after watching it with my husband it’s grown on me. I realize that there are just some shows that I enjoy more and find funnier when I watch it with my husband (i.e. Modern Family) and I think it’s the family shows because watching it with him is like sharing a private joke. We can relate and we’re laughing not only at the show but at our own shared memories.

Joanna Garcia, on the short-lived Privileged

You’ll see many familiar faces on Better with You as well. I love super cute Joanna Garcia (Mia), who was the lead in Privileged (I still can’t believe that show was cancelled – so sad to see the gorgeous girls go). Debra Jo Rupp (Vicky) who is best known as Kitty in That ’70s ShowJosh Cooke (Ben) was the groom in the ill-fated TV Show, Big Day (which I think is funnier than Better With You – but really had no chance of having more than one season because what will season 2 be about? The day after the Big Day??). And of course, who doesn’t know Kurt Fuller (Joel)?

New TV show: Raising Hope

Raising Hope (Series Premiere, September 21, 8 p.m.)

New FOX comedy about how a 23-year-old must raise his infant daughter, conceived by a one-night stand, with the help of his flawed family after the baby’s mother (who has killed multiple boyfriends) is given the death sentence and executed when the baby is only six months old.

The verdict?

I’m loving this comedy! It’s a bit on the darker side, but it’s so silly and out of this world that it’s hilarious. The first episode sets everything up perfectly without feeling rushed. I love the quirky, loser family with the immature dad, street-smart badass mom (TV bashing anyone?), party boy cousin (strobe pacifier FTW!) and Jimmy who wants to change the downward slope of his existence by taking care of his baby. Funny, sweet and nostalgic at the same time, this “super-flawed family” has me hooked on Raising Hope!

Here’s a teaser:
