RESTO RAVE ❤ DiploDinner at Sanur Seafood Restaurant
After one of the meetings TD’s colleagues offered to treat for dinner at Sanur Seafood Restaurant. We were with Ambassador Nena Manalo who is one fascinating individual – she is so interesting and has so many experiences! It was an unforgettable night of listening to her “war stories” and really yummy Chinese-style seafood! Everything we ordered was so yummy!

We found out about D’Cost from one of the managers of Blue Elephant Thai Restaurant Jakarta. Any mention of “super cheap” + “seafood” and we are so there! A cheap seafood resto right under our noses?!? HOW did we not know about this?!?

When college friends came to visit, I relied on our trusty “local” tour guide to pick our resto. E, who has been our saving grace as Jakarta expats, has lived most of his life in Indonesia. So much so that if he didn’t tell you he was Pinoy, you would assume that he was a Chinese Indonesian. He suggested Jun Njan (pronounced as Jun Nyan) for fresh seafood cooked chinese style. It’s a very casual resto and it’s cheap! Perfect! Photos after the jump.

Gubug Mang Enking is something that I enjoyed trying in Bali. The set-up is down-to-earth, using native materials in creative ways. Nothing fabulous, but simply cooked seafood and it’s best-selling tender beef ribs. What makes it different are the huts on top of the water. It reminds me of ISDAAN Restaurant in Tarlac – on a much smaller scale of course (because Isdaan is practically a theme park and definitely a must see/eat in if you are passing Tarlac, Philippines). Photos of the dinner at Mang Enking hosted by the Ambassador after the jump!

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ The My Cafe and Babi Merah experience
One thing we’ve learned from all our travels within Indonesia is never to judge a restaurant by it’s physical appearance. The best things can be had at the most unexpected (or even dodgiest looking) places. Read about the most unforgettable gastronomic experience we had in Medan at My Cafe Restaurant with the help of Ibu Rita’s street stall of Babi Merah (Pork Char Siew). Yes we ate at a street stall and we didn’t get a bad tummy, which is much more than we can say about Hotel Mulia Catering services, which always gives TD a bad tummy.

Our fligh was 545 am and we arrived in Medan after 2 hours. There is no time difference between Jakarta and Medan (the archipelago of Indonesia is so vast that it’s 17,000 islands are scattered across 4 different time zones).

“The crab that walks too far falls into the pot.”
- Haitian Proverb
Coming from a province near the sea and enjoying freshly caught seafood my entire life, I am what you call a seafood snob. I’d rather eat something else if the seafood isn’t fresh. I barely ate seafood when I was in Manila, because despite being in an archipelago it was hard to find fresh and inexpensive seafood.

As I was writing tomorrow’s post on our experience eating seafood by the bay in Phuket, I stumbled upon some pretty cute seafood quotes and was reminded of this hilarious TV commercial. I wanna share them with you as a sort of introduction to tomorrow’s seafood blog post – to whet your appetite so to speak (pun intended).
Do not overcook this dish. Most seafoods…should be simply threatened with heat and then celebrated with joy.
- Jeff Smith
Oysters are the most tender and delicate of all seafoods. They stay in bed all day and night. They never work or take exercise, are stupendous drinkers, and wait for their meals to come to them.

No we are not back in Bali. This resto in Jogja is just like the ones in Jimbaran Bay, except no beach =P I have to say, whatever they lacked in terms of the beach they made up for in rice – rice-fields that is.

After the Kecak Dance we went back to Jimbaran bay, but this time to the southern cluster on Jalan Four Seasons. We came prepared, with a resto recommended by E (who’s practically indonesian) and instructions to order everything grilled. Best decision ever.
