BAGAN TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Monastery on a Mountain

BAGAN TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Monastery on a Mountain

Yay, I’m doing another travel diaries post! This time it’s to remember an unforgettable experience when we were in Bagan, when we climbed 777 steps up a mountain to a Buddhist monastery on the summit. Mount Popa is a volcano in central Myanmar, which is a day trip away from Bagan. Some distance from it is Taung Kalat (pedestal hill) on top of which the monastery is located, which also referred to as Popa or Popa Taungkalat. The volcano itself is called Taung Ma-gyi (mother hill) to avoid confusion with the Taung Kalat.

YANGON TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Shwedagon Pagoda

The highlight of our stay in Yangon was the Shwedagon Pagoda. It was by pure luck that we ended up there late in the afternoon, and I highly recommend going there before sunset to anyone planning to go. You’ll see why in the pictures after the jump. Be warned, it’s a photo binge!

MYANMAR TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Getting the Inside Info

MYANMAR TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Getting the Inside Info
We booked our trip to Myanmar about a year ahead. There was an Air Asia promo and we went for it! Of course we also had to keep our eyes out for promo tickets to and from KL since there is not direct flight from Jakarta. Before our trip I was lucky enough to meet Diana, a fellow DiploWife who was just there last December. So prior to our February 2011 trip to Bagan I wrote her and she was helpful in giving us the “inside info” on Myanmar. More after the jump!

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ His and Hers Penhaligons Toiletry Case

For Christmas BDB (Big Diplo Bro) gave us these His and Hers Penhaligon’s Toiletry Cases. The leather is so luxuriously soft and the cutest thing about them are the zipper pulls – which are in the shape of the famous Penhaligon’s Perfume Bottle

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ Travalo Perfume Dispenser

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ Travalo Perfume Dispenser

As I’ve mentioned before BDB (Big Diplo Brother-in-law) is a consummate traveler and, like me, he loves his travel accessories and gadgets. This is his pasalubong for me on his last trip home to Manila. YAY! I’ve wanted one since he showed the Travalo Refillable Perfume Dispenser to me on his last business trip to Jakarta.

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Cincinati Leather Boutique in HCMC

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Cincinati Leather Boutique in HCMC

As we were looking along Dong Koi for a money changer, I realized that I brought the wrong bag. My roomy woven beach bag (WTH was I thinking right?), didn’t feel secure being held by hand and could also not be secured under my arms. I felt vulnerable while walking along the street after having been warned of the petty theft that occurs regularly. And as an answer to my prayers I found Cincinati Leather Boutique!

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ It’s All in the Packing (Cubes)

You might have noticed that TD and are frequent budget flyers. I always jokingly tell our friends that TD is addicted to Air Asia promo fares. (Most definitely half meant!) And thank goodness for the amazing invention of Packing Cubes (also called packing blocks) which has made the stressful task of packing and repacking less daunting!

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ MakeRoom Medicine Organizer

DIPLO TRAVEL ACCESSORY ✈ MakeRoom Medicine Organizer

Nothing is more essential to me than packing my vitamins and medicines for a trip! I want to be healthy enough to enjoy my vacations or maximize trips. Despite how fabulous travel is made out to be, there is no doubt that it can be very stressful for our bodies and quite tiring as well. I love this medicine organizer that I found in MakeRoom that fits everything for me and TD!

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Nyoman’s Cafe Jimbaran

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Nyoman’s Cafe Jimbaran

We love eating cheap grilled seafood in Bali. For this trip we wanted to try Warung Menega Jimbaran because we’ve eaten in Warung Menega Lombok and I kid you not, it was the best meal I’ve ever had in Indonesia. (It was not fancy at all – just monoblock chairs and tables under a hut and fresh grilled seafood. But what made it different aside from the marinade of the seafood was the different sauces that accompanied it.) Since it closed early (that means they are good because they ran out of seafood for the day) they recommended that we try Nyoman’s Cafe instead!

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ More pork dishes at Warung 31 Medan

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ More pork dishes at Warung 31 Medan

There are many Chinese living in Medan so there is an abundance of warungs that serve pork. Unfortunately Jade Restaurant doesn’t serve pork so we asked Sharon Lee the Jade restaurant manager for where we could find good pork. And she was so helpful to us. She recommended us to her favorite warung, 31.

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Our room at Marriott Courtyard Nusa Dua, Bali

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ Our room at Marriott Courtyard Nusa Dua, Bali

This is my first stay in the Nusa Dua area in Bali. So far we’ve tried staying in Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud. Nusa Dua is an entirely different world. It’s so much more quiet and relaxed than Kuta and Seminyak. Resorts are further from each other  and one needs a car to get out of the gated resort community. I recommend Nusa Dua if you just wanna stay in your resort and relax (romantic holiday/family with kids), but if you wanna explore Bali & go shopping, you waste a lot of time because it is far from other areas and the hotel here are not cheap either.

For this trip we are billeted in Marriott Courtyard Hotel. It’s part of the Marriot International Inc. (As are JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. , Renaissance Hotels, etc.) but is not in the same level of luxury as JW Marriott. Pictures of our room after the jump!

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ The My Cafe and Babi Merah experience

TRAVEL DIARIES ✈ The My Cafe and Babi Merah experience

One thing we’ve learned from all our travels within Indonesia is never to judge a restaurant by it’s physical appearance. The best things can be had at the most unexpected (or even dodgiest looking) places. Read about the most unforgettable gastronomic experience we had in Medan at My Cafe Restaurant with the help of Ibu Rita’s street stall of Babi Merah (Pork Char Siew). Yes we ate at a street stall and we didn’t get a bad tummy, which is much more than we can say about Hotel Mulia Catering services, which always gives TD a bad tummy.
